One Day Workshop on Crystallography

September 25th 2014
Tirana, Albania

Organized by Geological Society of Albania (GSA), International Union for Crystallography (IYCr2014-IUCr), European Crystallographic Association(ECA) and Italian Crystallographic Association (AIC) in collaboration with Institute of Crystallography-CNR (Bari, Italy)

The aim of the “one day workshop on Crystallography” is to familiarize the geological community with the crystallographic methods and instrumentations applied in the fields of geology and material sciences.
The workshop is organized by Institute of Crystallography (IC), of Italian National Council of Science (CNR), Bari, Italy and is supported by the International Year of Crystallography 2014 (IYCr2014) and International Union of Crystallography (IYCr), Crystallographic Italian Association (AIC), European Crystallographic Association (ECA), Geological Society of Albania and the Faculty of Geology and Mining, Tirana, Albania.
The IC merges two souls of Crystallography: methodological and experimental.
It develops innovative crystallographic methods, applicable to inorganic and biological materials;
It studies the structure of proteic molecules and small molecules of industrial and bio-pharmaceutical interest;
It characterizes materials of technological interest as nano-crystals and quasi-crystals;
It develops the instrumental research by introducing innovative scientific instrumentation in the international market;
It is an important developer of software of international interest.
The IC has strong interactions with national and international pharmaceutical industries, with industries working in the materials area of technological interest and with industries of scientific instrumentation.
The workshop is sponsored by the IC,IYCr2014-IUCr, AIC and RIGAKU company,. It will be held during the year 2014, which is declared by the General Assembly of the United Nations as the Year of Crystallography to celebrate the 100 years since the Nobel Prize was given to Max von Laue (1879-1960) for the discovery of X-ray diffraction by crystals.
For this IYCr2014 event we are inviting as main speaker Prof. Aldo Craievich from Department of Applied Physics at Institute of Physics, University of Sao Paolo, Brazil.
The further speakers are Dr. Michele Zema (Project Manager for IYCr2014), from IUCr, UK and University of Pavia, Italy; Dr. Dritan Siliqi, Dr. Davide Altamura and Angela Altomare from IC-CNR, Bari Italy; Dr. Francesco Capitelli from IC-CNR, Rome, Italy and Dr. Elvio Carlino, CNR-IOM, Trieste, Italy.
At the end of the workshop, in collaboration with Faculty of Geology and Mining, Polytechnic University of Tirana, Albania and with Faculty of Natural Sciences, University of Tirana, Abania, an open discussion about the past, present and the future of Crystallography in Albanian will be held. During this section, the presentation of special contributions of the crystallographic research, particularly from the young scientists, is strongly encouraged. The interested people can sent their contribution to dritan.siliqi@ic.cnr.it or ae_beqiraj@yahoo.com.
